Mar in Davao today

Senator Mar Roxas will fly to Davao today to keynote the Mindanao Island Congress of the League of Municipalities.

This would be a good follow through to his Visayas-Mindanao Initiative earlier forged among top city mayors in the south including Mayors Rody Duterte of Davao and Tommy Osmena of Cebu.

Big gain

Liberal Senator Mar Roxas' rating as choice for 2010 has improved from 6th to 4th in this latest SWS survey.

He still trails behind VP Noli de Castro and fellow Senators Manny Villar and Loren Legarda.

Mar and Korina

I hate to post this but it has become such a public issue that we can no longer ignore it.

Will Mar be more winnable with Korina?

Lakas is weak

The ruling Lakas party has come out with a "wish" list of probable senatorial candidates for 2010.

I call it a "weak" list.

Bereft of a viable presidential bet and short of funds that it cannot even hold its national directorate meeting, its list of "senatoriables" is a so-so line up of weaklings on a national campaign. A number of them may be provincial heavyweights like Congressmen Raul del Mar of Cebu and Simeon Datumanong of Maguindanao but I doubt if they can be considered the same on a nationwide scale.

The other 3rd-term members of the Lower House in the list are even worse, Ed Zialcita of Paranaque, Prospero Nograles of Davao, Arthur Defensor of Iloilo.

The experience of Prospero Pichay should give them wise lessons.

Lakas's other bets include QC mayor Sonny Belmonte and Milagros Magsaysay of Zambales, and reelectionist senators Bong Revilla and Lito Lapid. Of the two movie stars, the former might win again but the latter I doubt.

Belmonte, who is tipped as a presidential material could suffer an image problem if he slides down to the senate. Milagros Magsaysay would have a problem as a more famous namesake Ramon Magsaysay, Jr. is set to return to the Upper House.

As in the 2007 elections, the admin line up is in for a drubbing.

LP anniversary

The Liberal Party, one of the oldest in the country at 62, will mark its anniversary with community service activities on January 30.

The day-long program will include medical services, livelihood skills training and a mini-town hall meeting, clearly a total departure from traditional party founding celebrations.

Liberal, neo-liberal

Here is Liberal Senator Mar Roxas' A Manifesto for Change.

But Akbayan's Walden Bello reacts to it as a "recycled neo-liberal bull----"

"We have to do better than this," he wrote in an email.

Programs not Personalities

Kudos to both Liberal Senators Mar Roxas and Kiko Pangilinan, LP president and chair, respectively.

They are truly the kind of political leaders our nation need. They carry the torch of new politics, the politics of programs, platforms, issues and not personalities.

Read here their remarkable statements amid the trash talks about who is running in 2010.

Longer list

The list of "presidentiables" is getting longer.

But I believe that most of these speculations on who is running are more bark than bite.

Count me in says VP Noli after Erap's threat to run himself if the opposition fails to unite on a lone candidate and the ex-President's dare for a one-on-one match with FVR.

OMG they are even debating that of the ex-Presidents, only Cory is allowed by law to run again.

Loose cannons, I say of these trapo style of primaries. They are not testing the waters for 2010. They are clearly pulling our legs and fooling the voters.

This critical situation calls for more vigilance and advocacies for new politics. The more we need a Liberal President in 2010.

Mar in Davao

Liberal Party President Senator Mar Roxas flew in to Davao yesterday and had a very fruitful half day trip.

He was one of the guests at the 2nd Congress of the Barangay Justice Advocates (BJA) organized as a tool to prevent and resolve conflict at the grassroots level. The other was Chief Justice Reynato Puno. The project is being implemented by the Gerry Roxas Foundation and funded by USAID to help BJA in the provinces comprising the ARMM.

Before the mid-morning congress, Mar was guest at the local morning TV show of GMA, Una ka Bai!

Before flying back to Manila, he had lunch with members of the local press.

About half of the questions thrown at him were related to 2010.

He could not help but play with the media's fascination with the forthcoming elections.

Can't blame the guy really if the members of the media themselves are feasting over the fact that Mr. Palenke is "presidentiable" or in the old parlance, presidential timber.

Politicking

Look who's talking!

Like the Malacanang occupant, this spiritual leader cautions "presidentiables" about talking of the 2010 elections as if he himself is not "politicking."

What a hypocrite!

It is part of the job of these "presidentiables" to work NOW for the smooth and peaceful transition in 2010.

Kailan pa sila kikilos? Kung patay na ang kabayo?

Party raiding

Malacanang lawyer Sergio Apostol who made us laugh with his antics about the fate of former Vice President Teofisto Guingona who was involved in the Manila Peninsula siege yesterday predicted that the LP and the Nacionalistas would raid the members of Lakas.

No need to raid Lakas actually as JDV and Davao del Sur Gov. Douglas Cagas announced they are for Senate President Manny Villar.

Throw in the KBLs as well and we would find the NP as the party in the old Marcosian mold.

The LP, on the other hand, is on its "Balik Liberal" campaign and has been choosy in its recruitment among new and fresh leaders who support the party's vision and platform.

The 2010 battle is shaping up to be a clash of the old and the new, between the party of personalities and the party of principles.

If one is truly concerned about the nation, it would not be hard to make a wise choice.

Mar as LP head

Senator Mar Roxas has taken a very crucial step towards his quest for Malacanang - taking over the helm of the Liberal Party.

He was unanimously elected yesterday by the party's National Executive Council (NECO) at the historic Kalayayan Hall of Club Filipino at Greenhills, San Juan.

Oras Na! was how he described the party's drive to banner the aspirations of the Filipino people for dignity, decency and development under the party's People's First Agenda.

With a guest list of party leaders and friends of about 600, but more than 1,000 showed up including the first bloggers to put out websites for the 2010 elections.

Shown here with the new LP head and myself are young Kevin Chua and his father.

More woes for JDV

His rift with GMA temporarily settled by ex-president FVR, House Speaker JDV's woes, however, are not yet over.

Here is one more problem to face.

The LP has finally filed a case at the Supreme Court to help settle the row over proportional representation of the House contingent to the Commission on Appointments.

The 23-member LP at the Lower House is entitled to at least a seat at the CA but the House leadership has denied them this representation.

A principled stand like this deserves our support, and that of the highest court of the land.

More bets for 2010

In the first foray into familiar territory last week, recently pardoned former president Erap Estrada visited his mass base in Tondo, Manila. There, Manong Ernie Maceda floated a new tandem for 2010 - Makati Mayor Jojo Binay and the ex-president's son Senator Jingoy Estrada.

Maceda's trial balloon had its instant effect in drawing more and more "presidentiables" and "vice presidentiables" for the forthcoming polls.

Erap himself said the opposition considers Senators Manny Villar, Ping Lacson, Loren Legarda and Mar Roxas as possible standard bearers.

Here is the reaction of the administration party currently reeling from the rift between stalwarts JDV and GMA naming Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte and Senator Bong Revilla as probable Lakas bets.

Jingoy and Bong are both actors and bosom buddies until they parted ways due to the political divide over Erap's ouster in 2001.

Naga Mayor's blog

Please visit the blog of Liberal Mayor Jesse Robredo. He is one of the very few public officials to blog in the country.

Very likely not many Pinoy politicians know that " ... No one can become President of France without a blog ... " if only to emphasize the huge potentials of this new internet tool in politics and governance.

That quote was made by the former French Finance Minister, Benjamin Griveaux, who in 2004 became one of the first politicians to start a blog.
